A great first book in the series

Although a bit heavy on the facts and vague at times, I enjoyed this story. Mainly because I liked Amy from the very beginning. She was determined, funny and her concerns and struggles felt like the real deal. Her situation was not the best but she made the most out of the situation regardless, finding humor in the most of unexpected situations.
Ryan, on the other hand, was a bit more serious but interesting nonetheless. I loved that he was conflicted over his attraction towards Amy and that when Luke showed up he was a mess over it. He treated her with respect and gave her the comfort she needed when the time came for her to need someone to support her.
The family dynamic was a bit out there, especially when it was still a mystery as to what had truly happened and what was happening. However, Tamara Morgan did an excellent job in drawing me into the story in the beginning that when all the details came to the surface I was already invested in the story enough to not give up reading about it.
All in all, a great first book in the series with an interesting mix of the sweet and the spicy with an added mystery to round it all up.

Ms. Morgan gives a nice start to a new series with If I Stay. This is about the Montgomery family who own the town of Ransom Creek and those that work for them. This is a somewhat contemporary look at the class differences. This is a story that deals with the issues that everyone has…to just belong.
This was a nice easy read with light drama that revealed secrets, dealt with money and power, the past, desire, lust and mystery.
Ryan Lucas has a secret…former Hollywood stunt double; with a drinking problem and a past the deals with a million dollar car…a bad accident. Wanting his career back he has to find a way to strip the past away and find a way back into the good graces of the Hollywood crowd. As a chauffeur for the Montgomery’s he is hoping for that chance.
Enter.. Amy Saunders who grew up with the Montgomery’s; her mom used to be the nanny which allowed her opportunities such as being able to take dance lessons. Giving her a career she may not have actually wanted. Now she has come back home to be the nanny to the younger Montgomery children.
There is chemistry between Amy and Ryan. Admit it or not they are bonding and falling for each other. Ryan just wants to get back to Hollywood when along comes Amy a breath of fresh air and sunshine.
Right from the beginning you get pulled into the maze that is the story. Even the struggles that each character is going through become real. I found this to be like a readable version of a soap opera. You have everything that your average soap opera deals with…class issues, secrets, power, romance, money, lust. I liked this engaging story especially when Jake came home. He is your proverbial bad playboy whom Amy used to be attracted to. He wants nothing more than to get her to go to bed with him. After all she has grown up. It has the makings of a love triangle perhaps? There is allot of lust and sexy interaction implied with these three. Who is going to get Amy?
I found that although the beginning was a bit slow once you hit the middle it took off and was rather fun. The easy friendship between the characters was believable. The history was vague at times but it was usually revealed later on so that wasn’t much of a problem. Overall I enjoyed this nice easy read where sometimes you find that you can actually go home and find what you are looking for.

Nice Story, but Felt Flat

From the moment I saw If I Stay, I've been anxious to read it. Tamara Morgan is an author whose work has come highly recommended to me. As much as I anticipated this book, though, I had a hard time connecting with it. To be honest, I can't even pinpoint why that is. I don't think it was a mood issue, because I was anxious to dig in. I liked the cover, the premise. It could be that the story felt as if it were opening mid-scene. I didn't know these characters, but felt as though I were meant to. I did get my bearings on the "who's" and "what's" after just a bit, but never felt that I settled into the story.
I did like Ryan and Amy, and sympathized with what brought them to Montgomery Manor. They were both kind and yearning towards one another. Amy was a sweetheart, very plucky (never thought I'd say that word). Ryan was a bit aloof and gruff, but melted a but for Amy's charms. They both had interesting backgrounds, and I liked that the story explored where they came from, why they landed at Montgomery Manor, and what they wanted from life beyond there.
If I Stay seems to set up for a love triangle in the beginning, but didn't push it heavily. For those who're triangle averse, there's no contest between Ryan and Jake. Jake is never a serious, or even minor contender for Amy's heart. He was such a sleeze, but eventually became sort of endearing. The plot focused more on Amy's connection to the Montgomerys and Ryan's longing to return to his former career. Their story had a very nice resolution.
Despite my lack of overwhelming enthusiasm for If I Stay, it was a nice story. I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a try.
