When Stephen's father passes away in 1861, he and his mother and brother are left at the mercy of a cruel uncle. As the Civil War intensifies to the south, Stephen's brother enlists to fight for the Union and help support the family. The trials of prison camp are severe but at war's end Stephen is set to be sent home to Indiana aboard the steamboat Sultana. However, disaster strikes and the ship catches fire and capsizes in America's largest maritime disaster. Through luck and fortitude Stephen survives, but his Civil War journey is one that will engage readers of all ages. Based on historical facts and characters, Stephan's story truly captures the essence of the era.

Gr 5-8-In this highly relatable work of historical fiction, Shoulders brings to life one of the darkest chapters in American history: the Civil War. The narrative revolves around 13-year-old Stephen Gaston, who manages to enlist in the Union Army to support his mother, despite being underage. As a personal bugler for a major in the Ninth Indiana Cavalry, Stephen must act as his company's timekeeper-both during daily activities and on the battlefield. The story is told from Stephen's point of view and is full of historical details. As the character experiences training, battle, and imprisonment, readers are privy to what it must have been like to experience war from a soldier's perspective. Like young Stephen, most enlistees are eager to "see the elephant" (be part of a battle), but their excitement fades as the realities of mosquitoes, heat, and constant drilling set in. The novel covers very little of the Battle of Sulphur Branch Trestle, instead focusing on the horrendous conditions after the Ninth is forced to surrender. Life in "Camp Morgan" is almost unimaginable: the men must deal with outbreaks of dysentery and lice, flooding has made proper sheltering impossible, and overcrowding makes food so scarce that the men resort to eating rats. Through so much misery, the author is still able to evoke feelings of empathy and hopefulness. Faith in humanity is demonstrated throughout: soldiers unselfishly make sacrifices to take care of one another, and even the guards, whose lives are not much better than the prisoners', are presented in a sympathetic light. Readers will feel like they are marching alongside Stephen, a young bugler for the Union army during the Civil War. The exhilaration of supporting the Union, the horrors of the battlefield, the squalor of the Confederate prison camp and relief at being sent "home" at the end of the war are palpable. Through all the trials that Stephen suffers, he observes humanity and compassion shown by fellow soldiers and even Confederate people he encounters during his trek. A superb historical novel based on documented facts (names, events, and songs of the era) that are detailed in the addendum of the book. Crossing the Dead Line delivers!

Thank goodness for Michael Shoulders! I grew up near the Mississippi River, and even lived in Memphis for a few years as an adult - but had never heard of the Sultana disaster. In Crossing the Dead Line, readers are presented with a story about a young man's experiences during the Civil War and the sinking of the Sultana - in a way that is both heart-breaking and uplifting. The most inspiring aspect of this book, for me, was knowing that Stephen was a real person, not just a character created to enhance a story. Using facts gathered from old newspapers, military records, etc., Shoulders constructed a story that accurately depicts Stephen's experiences - both the hardships and triumphs. Thank you, Michael, for writing a book that brings Stephen's story to life for readers, and for shedding light on the forgotten Sultana sinking.

Crossing the Deadline is a "must read"!

It is hard to find a book that depicts the event of the Civil War for elementary students. Mike Shoulders does a wonderful job of captivating and holding the attention of the reader. He uses many first-hand accounts and does an extraordinary job. The details captured in his novel is evidence Shoulders spent many hours researching facts about the Civil War to portray the painful experiences of the war. Steven enlists in the Army at age 13. The book is written in a way that the reader is so engrossed in the story they become Steven, feeling every emotion. Crossing the Deadline is a book for all ages.

Wonderful book. My grandson really enjoys reading this particular book. We have had a difficult time getting him to read. The first thing that happened is he has new glasses and he seems to enjoy history. With this in mind it was perfect to meet Michael Shoulders and hear his explanation to his research and the history behind this book. Keep going Michael!
