GLENN STOUT is the series editor for The Best American Sports Writing and author of many books, including Red Sox Century, Yankees Century, Young Woman and the Sea and Fenway 1912, the only title to win both SABR's Seymour Medal as the best baseball book of history or biography and the Ritter Award, as the best book of the Deadball Era, in the same year. A confluence of events and circumstances would lead to the Babe’s exit from Boston.

From the time I was a little kid this Red Sox fan has been spoon fed the proposition that the only reason Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees was to obtain needed capital to finance a promising new Broadway show. I certainly had no reason to doubt that version of events….until now. In his new book “The Selling of the Babe: The Deal That Changed Baseball and Created a Legend” author Glenn Stout systematically dispels the mythology surrounding the most significant deal in the history of major league baseball. It turns out that there was a hell of a lot more going on behind the scenes than anyone knew. The more you read about this transaction the more sense the deal makes. It is a compelling saga.
No one will dispute that George Herman “Babe” Ruth was one of the most gifted players of his era. Had he minded his p’s and q’s he most likely never would have been traded away from the Red Sox. But Ruth was an enigma and by the conclusion of the 1919 season management and even most of his Boston teammates had grown weary of his antics. He drank, caroused and engaged in all manner of irresponsible behavior. Furthermore by 1918 Ruth had become enamored with the idea of giving up pitching and playing in the field full-time. All he wanted to do was hit the baseball. But his performance as an everyday player to that point was wildly uneven. As Stout reports: “when viewed through the lens of exactly where the Red Sox were at the end of the 1919 season, before anyone knew what was about to come, it is not an insignificant piece of the puzzle that was still Babe Ruth. Over the past two years, across nine months of regular season play, Ruth had been a spectacular and extraordinary hitter for perhaps four months—six weeks in 1918 and then the last half of 1919. The rest of the time he had been a troublesome and problematic player of almost average ability, someone who had shown he would leave in a moment’s notice for a chance to make a penny more, team be damned.” Furthermore, Ruth was out of shape and now after signing a three year contract the previous winter he was demanding a doubling of his salary. Rumors began to swirl that Ruth might be on the block.
They say it takes two to tango and the fact of the matter is that New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert coveted the slugger. Ruth had always performed well at the Polo Grounds (which the Yankees shared with the NL Giants) and Ruppert saw an opportunity to snatch the Babe from his good friend and ally Harry Frazee. The Sox owner had come to the conclusion that he could no longer afford Ruth. In those days the Red Sox were viewed as a “small market” team and Massachusetts “blue laws” prevented the Sox from playing games on Sundays. This was a huge financial disadvantage that was difficult to overcome. Furthermore, Frazee did not own Fenway Park and desperately wanted to purchase it from the Taylor family. In the end Frazee made a calculated business decision to sell the Babe not only to rid himself of a headache put also to acquire the funds to purchase the ballpark. As I indicated earlier, when you read the fine print you will come to understand that this was a transaction that made a great deal of sense for all of the parties involved. Stout also chose to include a very telling statement from Harry Frazee a few days after the deal was consummated. The jury was still out on Ruth but clearly Frazee had had his fill of him.
I found “The Selling of the Babe: The Deal That Changed Baseball and Created A legend” to be a meticulously researched and extremely well-written book. This is an important addition to the history of the national pastime. This book is at once highly informative (lots of new information) and extremely entertaining. In my view “The Selling of the Babe” would be an excellent choice for sports fans, history buffs and general readers alike. I could not put this one down. Very highly recommended!

Babe Ruth reinvents baseball

It has been said that the Boston Red Sox's sale of Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees is one of baseball's greatest follies. There is a legend that Red Sox owner Harry Frazee, a theatrical producer, was in need of money to finance a musical. Glenn Stout goes behind the urban myths to give us the story of what really happened in The Selling of the Babe. Beyond the story of the sale, Stout tells the story of how Babe Ruth changed baseball itself. The game had become dull, practically a marionette show. While Babe Ruth will never be accused of being an intellectual, he had an understanding that the home run was what people wanted to see. Up to that time, thanks to the so-called "dead ball", home runs were unusual. Ruth, a giant of a man, was captivating crowds with his hitting, but the Red Sox leadership was unhappy with his desire to move away from pitching (and at his worst, Ruth could be a selfish lout). Frazee was often in conflict with Ban Johnson, the autocratic president of the American League, who sought to get rid of Frazee. It didn't help Frazee that while he owned the Red Sox, he didn't own Fenway Park. In New York, Jacob Ruppert, owner of the Yankees, was concerned that with Prohibition imminent, his brewery business would suffer and he would have to count on his baseball team. Frazee and Ruppert put together a deal that Stout argues would actually be a win-win for the two men. Ruth would of course be a smash hit with the Yankees, helped by a new style of ball that meant more home runs and more excited fans. His impact on the game would be immense. "Ruth didn't transform the sport; it remade itself in his image." I thought the book interesting and I learned some new information about the early days of baseball. If I have a criticism, it's Stout's frequent lapsing into slang, perhaps in an effort to catch the spirit of the time. Overall, baseball fans will have a good read that may challenge old legends.

A must read for fans of Ruth and the history of the game.

There are several types of sports biographies. There are the 101 versions that give a glossy third person portrait of a career. There are those motivated by passion and profit, be it a strong like or dislike of a subject. Occasionally you find an ambitious author with a scholarly agenda who aspires to capture a major figure in context with his time. Such biographies often border on sociological studies and if done well are my personal favorites. An example of one done very well was Michael Isenberg's "John L. Sullivan and his America". Another terrific job is Mr. Stout's "The Selling of the Babe."
You can tell when an author has done his homework. Mr. Stout's book is well researched and gives a terrific, factual portrait of the birth of the Ruth phenomenon, warts and all in a real time format. You can study the players, what went down and why decisions were made. You also get to relive the birth of a legend and how his performances impacted an exhausted but jubilant post war country aching for escapist joy.
This is a standout job and highly recommended.
